Main News Story

Schools may have received a Freedom of Information (FoI) request by The Times newspaper asking for information about pupil funding and whether schools have asked for voluntary contributions from parents.

The email, from Nicola Woolcock (Education Correspondent) states that this is in preparation for a report on funding cuts in schools The email contains a link to an online survey with several questions:

  • Name of staff member responding (headteacher)
  • Email address (please use the school mailbox address)
  • School phone number
  • Per pupil funding for 2018-19, 2017-18, and 2013-14 (for comparison)
  • Whether requests have been made for voluntary contributions
  • Comments on the impact of budget restraints on learning

This is a legitimate request and schools need to provide the per pupil funding responses within the FoI timescale of 20 working days. Schools may choose whether to add their comments or not – our understanding from The Times is that no school will be quoted in a report without their consent.

Under GDPR and the increased requirements for documentation, schools will need to fill in a FoI request form for their school records. A partly pre-filled FoI form is available from the Schools Data Protection Officer dposchools@somerset.gov.uk
