Crochet – Working in the Round

Saturday 2 February 2019                             Fee: £55

Master the exciting art of crochet in the Round. On this workshop you will follow both written patterns and chart instruction and learn how to apply the abbreviations and symbols to your work. We will look at joining motifs and working in spaces as we continue to crochet, avoiding hours of sewing up at the end. We will also look at the use of colour on this workshop and the impact it has on the design process. If you can create a chain with confidence this workshop is for you. Suitable for those with a basic knowledge of crochet. There will be an additional cost of £7 for materials payable to the tutor on arrival.


Basic Corn Dolly Making Workshop

Saturday 2 February 2019                             Fee: £65

Corn Dollies have been made for thousands of years, they were traditionally created from the last sheaf of corn of the harvest to give the "corn spirit" a home for the winter and creating them is one of the many customs to celebrate the harvest.  Come and learn not only the history of the delightful age-old tradition of straw craft, but also try a fascinating new hobby, incorporating beautiful weaving techniques and attractive designs. Create a unique piece of straw work for you to decorate your home or to give as a present.  The workshop is suitable for complete beginners and includes a box of materials to create at least two items one being a horse shoe decorated with ribbons and flowers.


Enhancing Wellbeing Day Retreat

Thursday 7 February 2019                             Fee: £55

Life today can be pretty full-on with many of us finding it a challenge to balance our responsibilities and demands with our own health and wellbeing. This one-day workshop is an opportunity to learn practical tools and techniques that you can implement within your daily life to help strike the balance between being effective and looking after yourself. We will take a deeper dive into 4 key areas that can support you – Mindfullness, stress management, energy management and sleep. Perfect for those wishing to take their first positive and proactive steps to a healthier lifestyle or those wishing to deepen their understanding.


Beginning Family History

Saturday 9 February 2019                             Fee: £55

Just starting out on Family History or want to understand in more detail those core research documents such as Birth, Marriage or Death Certificates and Census pages? Did you know a UK birth certificate often contains between six and eleven facts which you need to record or that Catholic marriages are recorded by the Registrat completely separate to the Church marriage register, which even in the twentieth century was often recorded with “latin" names? We will also look at the various providers of information, both paid for and free, looking at indexes and transcripts and the challenges of searching for information, using examples from the attendees' research where possible.


Hand Embroidery Including Whitework Techniques

Dinner Friday 15 – Lunch Sunday 17 February 2019

Fees:  from £220

Embroider a dainty design on to crisp which fabric, using whitework techniques, but with coloured threads to give it a modern twist. You will use techniques such as eyelets, trailing and satin stitch. You will learn how to use a traditional 'stiletto' tool to form perfectly round eyelets in a variety of sizes. A variety of other hand embroidery stitches will also be covered, such as stem stitch and split stitch. This class is for all levels of embroiderer.


Stitching Stretch Fabric

Tuesday 19 February 2019                            Fee: £55

This course is aimed at students who would either like to make up stretch fabrics on an overlocker or on their sewing machines. Areas covered will be choosing the correct stitch to suit the fabric, setting the differential feed on over lockers, using twin needles for hemming and attaching neck bands and cuffs. You will need the ability to use your own sewing machine/overlocker, which you will need to bring with you.


An Introduction to Watercolours

Dinner Friday 1 – Lunch Sunday 3 March 2019

Have you ever thought of painting with watercolours but don't know what to do? Then this is the course for you. Aimed at complete beginners, I start with all the basics so that you can paint with confidence. Passing on some of the tricks of the trade I will show you what materials are available, what is a good buy and what is not, how the materials work then with practical demonstrations and exercises show you how to do all the basic washes; flat, graded and variegated, how to correct mistakes, how to build up a simple picture and by the end of the course you will be able to handle your materials with a lot of confidence as well as having produced finished paintings. There will be an additional cost of £10 for materials payable to the tutor on arrival.
