Summary

Please find attached a flow chart for dissemination with staff groups outlining the actions they will need to take if they either: - Develop the symptoms of coronavirus - Are contacted by NHS Test & Trace as a close contact of a confirmed case of coronavirus

Main News Story

You will see that if a staff member tests positive then they will be required to self-isolate for 10 days. All close contacts of the positive will be identified and also required to isolate for 14 days. This has potential to cause significant disruption within your setting.

For information a close contact of a confirmed case will be identified as:

- direct close contacts - face to face contact with an infected individual for any length of time, within 1 metre, including being coughed on, a face to face conversation, or unprotected physical contact (skin-to-skin)
- proximity contacts - extended close contact (within 1 to 2 metres for more than 15 minutes) with an infected individual
- travelling in a small vehicle, like a car, with an infected person

Therefore there are mitigating actions that can be taken within your setting to minimise the number of close contacts a member of staff may have and the potential disruption if they test positive. These include:

- Discouraging car sharing – attached is a document that includes some national resources for use
- Maintaining social distancing in communal areas – such as the staff room and for any training sessions
- Where possible maintaining social distancing in the classroom – this may not always be possible but particulary for teachers who are moving between classes and year groups this will help to minimise disruption
- Avoid large gatherings such as assemblies with more than one group

More detail is provided here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak/guidance-for-full-opening-schools

The use of face coverings in communal areas is at the discretion of the head teacher, but may be appropriate if social distancing is not possible outside of classroom settings.

The decision on who is a close contact will be taken following a risk assessment conducted by the South West Health Protection Team. Therefore if you have a confirmed case in a staff member or pupil at your school/setting please ensure you notify the health protection team on 0300 303 8162 before taking any decisions to send other staff or students home.
