Message from Mrs Halstead
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back! It has been wonderful to have everyone return to school this week and it has been really lovely to see the children happy, smiling and excited about returning to their learning with their friends. As you know, all hygiene precautions and social distancing measures are being adhered to and I hope the Government announcement this week of the limit to social gatherings will be followed by us all in the community in an effort to keep everyone safe.
You will have had a welcome letter and a termly plan from your class teachers this week. The topic this term is "Once upon a time" and is designed to encourage the children to use their imaginations and get absorbed in stories. There will be lots of opportunities for the children to be creative and collaborate on projects. Our whole school value for this half term is "Community" and I will be broadcasting assemblies live from my office each week (!) via Teams until we can gather as a whole school again.
Achievement Assemblies will now be held on a Monday via the Teams App, and I will present certificates to pupils (via their class teacher) which will have been awarded the week before. This will mean that your child will receive a mention in Catch-Up retrospectively. Please do continue to email photos or certificates gained at home to the office or class email account if you can. It is important we celebrate any achievements and recognise that learning happens at home as well as in school!
Thank you to you all for following our systems for drop off and collection. It seems to be working well for the moment so we will continue with this for the time being. As you know, parents and visitors are being discouraged from coming on to the school site until guidance allows otherwise. We are aiming to start face to face music tuition and one or two lunchtime clubs after half term but will confirm this with you as soon as we can.
Please do contact the school office via email if you have any questions or queries.
In the meantime, stay safe.
The office will be closed from Monday 14th September 2020 to Monday 28th September 2020. Wherever possible, please use the class email addresses to contact Class Teachers with any questions you may have during this time. Please be aware that there may be a delay in response times.
Summer Holiday Achievements
Well done to Jess L who has completed 6 workout challenges to gain her SASP “Personal Challenges Gold Award". We are very proud of you!
Well done also to Ben D who completed the Somerset Library Summer Reading Challenge.
We are delighted to announce that we have been lucky enough to secure six weeks of cricket training provided by “The Chance to Shine" scheme. This is run by Somerset County Cricket Club. Independently, Squirrel Class and Hedgehog Class will be participating in this active programme from Tuesday next week as part of their PE lesson.
Please note that we will not be offering school based music tuition (Piano, Drums and Ukulele) at this time. This will be reviewed before half term and we will let you know the outcome as soon as possible.
IMPORTANT LUNCH ORDERING
Due to the new ordering process with the temporary company, we are unable to provide any “spare" lunches. If your child does not bring a lunch to school, you will be contacted and required to bring one into school as soon as possible. This is in line with many schools in the county.
Please ensure that ALL ParentPay balances are cleared ASAP as failure to do so will affect future bookings. If you are experiencing difficulties in doing so, please contact Ms Coles in the office.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, The York Inn are no longer able to provide us with a trial for hot lunches at this time. We are currently looking into an alternative but meanwhile sandwich lunches are still available to order / pay for (if applicable) on Parentpay. All monies paid for the York Inn trial week have been refunded.
Children eligible for a school lunch / FSM will be ordered a sandwich using previous week's choices for this week.
Flu Vaccinations – Whole School
A letter was sent out this week with information on the Flu Vaccination which is offered to all students from Reception to Year 6 and will take place on Thursday 24th September 2020. Please follow the link in the letter even if you do not give consent to the vaccination by 16th September 2020.
Year 6 – Secondary Placement Applications
For children due to transfer to a secondary or upper school the closing date for applications is 31 October 2020 and the national offer day is 1 March 2021.
The primary and secondary admission guides for the 2021 admissions process can be found on our website www.somerset.gov.uk/admissions Parent/carers are advised to read the guide thoroughly before making an online application.
In previous years the Admissions and Entitlements Team have written to every parent/carer of children due to start or transfer school explaining how to apply, key dates and where to find further information. Due to budgetary constraints they will no longer be writing individually to parents. Information can be found on their website www.somerset.gov.uk/admissions and they make use of Facebook, twitter, local press etc as usual to raise awareness.
Castle School Open Morning / Evening
Unfortunately, The Castle School are not able to hold open mornings or evenings this year due to the Covid 19 restrictions.
They are planning to put a 'virtual' open morning video on our website towards the end of next week, so please check their website.
We are waiting to hear from other schools as to what they will be offering and will let you know as and when we have a response.
Letters Home – Action Required
You should have received an envelope containing important information with regards to Internet Safety, Personal Details and the Home School Agreement. Please read through these documents with your child, sign and return them to your Class Teacher by Friday 18th September 2020 to enable us to update our records. The Home School Agreement (2 copies normally sent) is on our website (under Policies & procedures) should you wish to refer to this at a later date.
Due to Safeguarding policies we are required to have a minimum of THREE emergency contact numbers for your child. Please ensure you complete these details on the Data Collection Sheet (containing children's personal details) and amend any old numbers and addresses.
