Hazel Class - Class Teacher Mrs Lois Bowery
A typical week in Hazel Class will consist of daily maths and English lessons, including reading, writing and spelling. We have weekly music lessons with Mrs Hurley from Somerset Music who this year is teaching us the ukulele. Our weekly PE sessions cover a range of sporting activities throughout the year. We are also taking part in the Golden Mile to increase our daily exercise. Furthermore, we have one RE lesson each week as well as a PSHE lesson using SCARF resources where Harold the Giraffe helps us to improve our Social and Emotional skills. The rest of our time is spent on our topic work related to the other curriculum subjects including science, computing, history, geography, art, DT and French through a topic approach to learning. Children are well-motivated and we encourage each other to do our best at all times.
Children have access to technology such as laptops and iPads to support their learning through all areas of the curriculum and have an understanding of how to keep themselves safe online both in the classroom and at home.
Last year we enjoyed visits in from people in the community to enhance our learning including an interview with an architect during our Grand Designs topic, a day with a computing specialist on an 'open-ended' challenge, discussions with a pastor from a local church in RE as well as an outdoor art session with a local artist, not to mention a singing session with a music specialist. So far this year we have enjoyed a session with Pete the Poet who raises awareness of equality through the medium of poetry.
Weekly homework is given to each child for spelling, maths and some topic-based work. This is given in the children's homework folder to be returned the following week. The children are also expected to read at home on a daily basis with this being recorded at least four times a week. Reading Log checks are done on a weekly basis and housepoints are awarded for those who have read at least four times.
Children are rewarded for hard work and for following the class rules through housepoints and weekly golden time activities.
