In our school we aim for our children to be successful learners so we like them to:

  • Be curious
  • Persevere
  • Work collaboratively
  • Be creative
  • Empathise
  • Be independent
In our community we share these values:
  • Aspiration
  • Responsibility
  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Tolerance

We use 'Letters and Sounds' as our phonics scheme, which the children use daily in their lessons. We use a variety of reading schemes to help our children become fluent and confident readers by the end of KS1.

Among those we use are Dandelion Readers to extend and consolidate phonic knowledge; Rigby Star and Oxford Reading Tree

Our broad and balanced curriculum will stimulate your child to acquire knowledge and develop learning skills. Children’s achievements are celebrated and everyone enjoys success and praise regularly during their time in school. We encourage children to become independent and confident in both their work and social development through regular involvement in presentations, concerts and competitions.

At Key Stages 1 and 2 we follow the 2014 National Curriculum. (Click here for a link to the National Curriculum document) This includes core subjects: English , Maths and Science. The foundation subjects taught are: Design and Technology, Computing, History, Geography, PHSE, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education. We believe that children learn more when subjects are linked together in a way that makes sense and stimulates their interest.

At Haselbury we teach most of our foundation subjects through a whole school topic approach. Click on the link below to find out what we are learning about this year.

Foundation Stage

In the Foundation Stage we are dedicated to providing high quality, play based learning opportunities for children which inspire and excite the imagination.

Our Curriculum offers:

  • Indoor and outdoor learning on a daily basis
  • Opportunities to explore and investigate
  • An environment designed to support independence Practical, hands on activities
  • Supportive adults who guide learning

All areas of learning (Personal, Social & Emotional Development; Communication & Language; Physical Development; Literacy; Mathematics; Expressive Arts and Design; Understanding the World).

Part of our curriculum is delivered in our ‘Haselden’ area in the field. Children spend some time each week working outside on team building, social skills and problem solving activities. We think this is essential for children who have a more active learning style.

Somerset Music Tuition

This year, Year 3 and 4 pupils are having music lessons with Somerset Music on behalf of Sound Foundation Somerset. The lessons are subsidised at source and the remaining costs are covered by our Friends association.

The children are currently learning their music through playing the Samba instruments. The children learn the basics of music as well as how to play some popular songs. Every year we hold a popular concert so that the children can perform what they have learned. You can see how much they enjoy this!

Sex and Relationship Education

Sex education is delivered through planned aspects of science and Personal, Social and Health Education. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Sex and Relationship Education (SRE). If you wish to withdraw your child from SRE, please discuss this with your child’s class teacher in the first instance.

The school’s policy on teaching Sex and Relationship Education is available on the key information page.
