Gardening and Cookery
We believe that children should be introduced to the joy of learning these basic life skills during their time at school.
We have regular sessions of gardening and cookery each week. Children work in small groups with a trained and talented Teaching Assistant. In their gardening session they are taught how to manage the school plot, how to do a range of skills that will encourage fruit, food and flowers to grow, and are given practical advice on health and safety.
In their cookery session the same group of children are taken to our ‘cookery room’ to try out a range of recipes. Where we can, we use the produce from the school garden and make for example marrow chutney, crab apple jelly and carrot soup. Children can taste as they cook, and usually take a sample home.
Children are taught a range of useful kitchen skills and the sessions contribute to their maths and language learning.
As children come up through the school they all have a turn at these two sessions. Some children may attend more regularly if their circumstances mean that it would be beneficial to them.
